The Opportunity
The Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History in Kennesaw, Georgia, is currently seeking an energetic and responsible individual for the position of Curator. The Southern Museum, located 22 miles north of downtown Atlanta, is part of the prestigious Smithsonian Affiliations Program and home to the steam locomotive “General.” The Museum includes Civil War and railroad exhibitions, a recreation of an early twentieth-century locomotive factory, the Jolley Education Center, and a Research Center Library and Archives. The Curator reports to the Operations Manager and is responsible for overseeing the artifact collection and museum galleries and assisting with other duties regularly, such as tours, programming, events, and visitor services. Examples of Work
• Maintains storage and care of museum artifacts and collections; provides inventory, cataloging, identification, documentation, condition assessment, and preservation.
• Actively pursues acquisitions and donations of artifacts that support the museum mission.
• Develops conceptual exhibit plans including artifact selection, design, and associated exhibit activities, such as photography, labeling, narrative text, and brochures; oversees exhibit design and installation services.
• Maintains collections and exhibits; manages environment and storage; repairs and maintains exhibit components; monitors lighting, humidity, and other conditions.
• Coordinates with other institutions to obtain the use of and/or the loan of artifacts as deemed appropriate; receives and reviews loan and traveling exhibit requests; prepares and submits loan and traveling exhibit requests; negotiates contract details; maintains related documentation.
• Represents the Museum when requested at meetings and conferences, with the media, etc.; gives presentations; grants interviews; provides information; works with state and regional agencies, schools, and other historical organizations to develop educational programs and exhibits.
• Participates in the day-to-day activities and operations of the Museum; greets visitors; conducts tours; answers questions; assists visitors in the gift shop; receives payment for entry, gift shop purchases, etc.; ensures the safety of visitors and the security of exhibits.
Requirements
Master’s degree in education, history, museum studies, or related field supplemented by three years of paid, full-time professional experience in museum collection management or historic preservation. Excellent writing skills include the ability to conduct historical research, create interpretive text and labels, develop short and long-range plans, and make verbal presentations. Knowledge of, or ability to learn, Civil War and Reconstruction, Industrialization, southern social history, and southeastern railroad history. Familiarity with PastPerfect is preferred along with demonstrated collections management skills and ability.
Schedule and Compensation
Primary schedule is Tuesday through Saturday (although flexibility is required based on museum, event, and program needs). This is a full-time salaried exempt city government position with excellent benefits. The annual salary range is likely $49,853.48 to $63,563.19 based upon qualifications and years of relevant/ professional experience. Candidates may also be eligible for partial relocation expenses.
