Job Purpose:
The Augusta Museum of History (AMH) seeks to hire a Registrar. Under the direction of the Executive Director and Deputy Director, the Registrar will be responsible for accessions and deaccessions, incoming and outgoing loans, including all collections documentation. The Registrar will set and implement collections policies and procedures and ensure high standards of collections care. This position will coordinate with all other departments at AMH.
Duties and Daily Responsibilities:
-Accession new acquisitions, assigning accession and catalog numbers to all objects in the collection; create and maintain all records, including catalog, condition, and location records within PastPerfect
-Process incoming and outgoing loans documentation and the handling, packing, and inspection of all objects entering or leaving AMH
-Oversee the photography of collections
-Deaccession and implement disposal when applicable
-Periodically review all policies and procedures affecting collections
-Provide best practices for collections care, including performing IPM, regular cleanings of all galleries and collections areas, and mitigating any risks to the collection
-Write and oversee grants for collections efforts
-Install and deinstall exhibits; position will include also developing exhibits
-Write quarterly articles for AMH newsletter
-Train and supervise collections interns and volunteers
Note: This is not an exhaustive list, the Registrar will be responsible for all other duties as assigned by supervisors.
Requirements and Qualifications:
Candidates with additional experience will be considered for the position.
-Master’s degree in Museum Studies or related field
-Demonstrated knowledge of museum registration methods and collections management best practices
-Two years experience as a Registrar or Assistant Registrar
-Ability to operate a computer using various programs, including Microsoft Suite, Adobe Photoshop, and Google applications
-Proficiency with a collections management database
-Excellent verbal and written communication skills with ability to write reports, professional correspondence, grants, and give public presentations
-Working knowledge of all major laws and regulations governing museum collections
-Ability to work effectively under pressure and work on a wide variety of projects concurrently
-Will occasionally have to work flexible hours - AMH is a small team and departments support each other
This is a full-time, salaried position. Range is $30,000 - $35,000.
